Translator

Translator shall transfer the meaning in the source language into the target language in order to produce a text which corresponds to the rules of linguistic system of the target language and meets the instructions received in the project assignment.

Throughout this process, the translator shall pay attention to the following:

Terminology: compliance with specific domain and client terminology, or any other terminology (glossary) provided, as well as terminology consistency throughout the whole translation.
Grammar: syntax, spelling, punctuation, orthotypography, diacritical marks.
Lexis: lexical cohesion and phraseology.
Style: compliance with the proprietary or client style guide, including register and language variants.
Locale: local conventions and regional standards.
Formatting (see Annex D).
Target group and purpose of the translation.
Use of any auxiliary materials provided by the project manager (background papers, templates, etc.)

Checking

After the initial translation, the translator shall check his/her own work. This process shall include checking that the meaning has been conveyed, that there are no omissions or errors and that the defined service specifications have been met. The translator shall make any necessary amendments.

Reviser/Editor

The reviser shall be a person other than the translator. The reviser shall examine the translation for its suitability for specified purpose. This shall include, as required by the project, full comparison of the source and target texts for terminology consistency, register and style, and making proper corrective measures, if needed.

When making corrective measures, the reviser is expected to rely on his/her:

Translating experience in the domain under consideration
Knowledge of text type conventions for as wide a range of standard-language and specialized texts as possible.
Linguistic and textual competence in source and target language that includes:
- knowledge of locale
- ability to understand the source language and mastery of the target language
Research competence, information acquisition and processing: Research competence includes the ability to acquire efficiently the additional linguistic and specialized knowledge necessary to understand the source text and to produce the target text. Research competence also requires experience in the use of research tools and the ability to develop suitable strategies for efficient use of all information sources available.
Cultural competence: Cultural competence includes the ability to make use of information on the locale, behavioral standards and value systems that characterize the source and target cultures.
Technical competence: Technical competence comprises the abilities and skills required for professional preparation and production of translations. This includes the ability to operate technical resources.

Reviewer (subject matter expert)

Reviewers shall be domain specialists in the target language. Foreign language skills are an advantage, but not a compulsory requirement.

The reviewer shall carry out a monolingual review to assess the suitability of the translation for the agreed purpose and recommend corrective measures (in the text of the document or in a separate document).

The Translation Agency’s in-house reviser/editor is the person to make the recommended corrective measures.

Proofreader

Proofreading is made when thorough revision/editing is not possible or expedient for any reason.

Proofreading shall necessarily include the following:

Reading the translated text without verifying its conformity with the original text. Such verification is only necessary for those parts of the text that appear to contain apparent errors / be apparently meaningless or incorrect.
Checking the accuracy of all factual data (numbers, including when spelt out in full, proper names, dates, etc.)
Checking the consistency of the key terms (which is particularly important if parts of the text were translated by different translators, especially if they had not been provided with a uniform glossary.)
Correcting spelling, punctuation, as well as basic grammar mistakes, stylistic errors or other mistakes, which can be identified in the process of reading the translated text and doing a spellcheck.
Checking the conformance of the key terms to the glossary (provided the proofreader is given a sufficient amount of time for that to be done.)
Checking the completeness of the translation; this includes checking whether there are extracts in the original text that have not been translated, including untranslated abbreviations. (Frequent omissions, including untranslated or transliterated abbreviations, are not allowed. A maximum of 2-3 omissions are allowed provided they are highlighted in a different color.
Checking the layout of the translated text (in the event that the customer stipulates specific requests on this account.)
Verifying the compliance of the translation to the requirements stipulated by the customer in respect of this specific translation
